Ideally like to see overlayed eight separate continuous lines showing the past decade:
one for median house prices
one showing inflation
one showing mortgage rates
one showing unemployment rates
one showing median salary
one showing percentage of household income to pay mortgage
one showing median mortgage payment
one showing homeownership rates
I think this chart would bring a ton of traffic to this site. I don't think there is current data for much of this.

Why stop at one decade? The further back you can go, the better, especially since this decade has been highly irregular.
Professor Shiller actually keeps his chart up to date, and it has some of what you suggested (it uses his home price index rather than the median). It's currently the second link from the top at http://www.irrationalexuberance.com/

Hi admin,
Could you plot the CSI data with 8,000 subtracted from the house prices from the time the credit took effect? It might be as simple as subtracting 8 from the index, since, if I recall correctly, the index tracks the cost of a house that originally cost $100,000 in the first year (index value = 100).
Thanks in advance! |

Do you have a reference indicating exactly when the credit took effect and what purchases would have qualified at the starting date (e.g., purchases which closed on or after)?
Each metro area CSI was actually set to 100 for January 2000, independent of the price at the time. I don't know whether they publish a direct conversion to prices. That could probably be approximated using the bounds of the tiered indexes, though.
