The Boston area's been losing jobs in tech since '02. I don't know why this article is coming up now, 6-7 years after the horse had left the barn.
Most of those robotics firms are DOD development enterprises and the others software boutiques hire, in small numbers locally, and then develop huge QA centers abroad when products come to maturity.
If you meet with a VC panel today, the first thing you'll be asked is your offshoring strategy in addition to the "big idea" and marketing strategies.
There's no comparison between today and the Rte 128 of the 70s and 80s. DEC and Wang alone, nevermind Data General, Prime, and the rest of the big tech firms, added 200K jobs to the Commonwealth when we had a little more than half the workforce of today. |

| I agree that Boston's tech luster has been lost. I feel like compared to my peers in other parts of the country that my career has been far more constricted. I see many of my older peers just struggling to get by, holding on to whatever tech job they can find. And we pay a premium in our cost of living for this benefit. The outflux of engineers in particular from this part of the country is astounding. |

Yes, this is especially disturbing because essentially, a layoff at an advanced age could be one's final gig in the industry.

Considering that you grew up in Texas, I'm surprised you're still here.
The only real reason why I'm here is because it's my hometown and I'd never felt too comfortable with the whole Richmond -> DC- > New Jersey -> Southern CT corridor, as a place to settle down, despite the higher concentration of jobs. As time goes by, more and more of my acquaintances and friends are out in Texas (all cities: Austin, Houston, and Dallas) so it won't be hard to relocate if it comes to that. |
