(On the original topic:) it seems like the point of adjusting for inflation is to allow comparison of economic conditions at different points in history. It may not make sense at the granularity of an individual transaction, but it's the only way to make sense of large scale affordability trends.
(On the stock market topic:) I have a couple of thoughts about this topic. For most ordinary folks, the main purpose of investment is just to save our money and protect it against inflation. If we can actually grow our money, that's a bonus. But I'm pretty sure that the wealthiest top 1-2% of the population will always find a way to grow their money. If the rest of us can go along for the ride, I think we'll win.
I'd also like to comment on this quote from a previous post:

It seems to me like this statement embodies one of the key questions about the recent housing market: should a house be viewed as a financial instrument? Or is it a savings plan? Or is it just a place to live? |
