I would have thought the reverse mortgages would be a better investment now if we think prices are still dropping. I guess it just depends how long you plan to live.

I never really understood the Fred Thompson fervor so maybe I'm missing the point.

It all just seems like another way for the boomers to leave less to the next generation.

The Fred Thompson thing bothered me a little bit too.

Basically, these reverse mortgages are about letting people live off the equity in their homes and their percentage of ownership decreases and decreases.

Because most believe that mortgage brokers and banks are sleazes and see the elderly as being vulnerable, lots of people see these as being a bit shady. I am naturally suspect of these as well, but I'm sure they work for certain people....

I think the Fred Thompson deal is that Fred Thompson was on television and ran for President and has that deep authoritive tenor voice so people think he is trading on his personality and credibility to make money at the expense of poor vulnerable elderly people. I remember people also thought it was weird to see Bob Dole, another former presidental candidate doing Viagra advertisements.

It's not just a general impression of a sleazy industry in this case. The specific company that he is promoting mortgages for has been in trouble with multiple states' attorney generals, including our own. Think Deval and Ameriquest.

I also say kudos to Bob Dole for doing the Viagra ads. That took guts.

Oh, no flies on Bob Dole; there have been some times where I could have used a couple of those tablets.

It was weird because you really didn't see that sort of thing from a presidential candidate.

I remember back during that time, every third joke coming out of Jay Leno and all the stand up guys was about Viagra. Given that was the context, it did take guts to do that commercial.
