In the comments to the recent PaperEconomy post on MA vs. RI unemployment, somebody provided links to some "heat maps" of unemployment in Massachusetts which I thought were a very nice visual tool. The commenter suggested comparing current unemployment:

http://www.localetrends.com/st/ma_massachusetts_unemployment.php?MAP_TYPE=curr_ue

with unemployment 1 year ago:

http://www.localetrends.com/st/ma_massachusetts_unemployment.php?MAP_TYPE=m12_ue

The site also has a page specifically for Greater Boston:

http://www.localetrends.com/metro/boston_massachusetts_home.php

On that page, there are links to heat maps for unemployment, foreclosures, and home prices. I particularly liked the contrast from clicking back and forth between the heat map of asking prices and the heat map of actual sale prices. It's a nice demonstration of the disparity between seller and market expectations. It also gives a good idea to potential buyers where sellers are most willing to negotiate.
