For the first time... I'm going to be a bit more upbeat about an IT merger situation.
Sun's day in the sun (no pun intended) was over, starting with the lack of a solid rebound, after the '01-'03 IT/telecom downturn. Many of their Silicon Valley stalwart R&D centers, like Menlo Park and Newark, were like ghost ships and due to all the overhang, they never bounced back and had to layoff, continually. I believe most of those facilities are pretty much closed today.
In the past, Oracle had acquired peer software companies like PeopleSoft and Siebel, and in those situations, they were considerably brutal. Nevermind, the fact, that they were hostile takeovers with executives as former arch enemies. With this new acquisition, however, Oracle is adding both a firmware and a middle layer company to its portfolio. In other words, other than HR/accounting, they pretty much need the rest of the R&D (plus support) skeleton crew and won't be needing to fire more than the actual minimum, esp in MA. Sun's intellectual property and skilled staff are actually of use to Oracle, growing as a company and Sun, as a stand alone company, wasn't capable of growing without a solutions provider.
So all and all, I'm all right with this news. |
