A debt is a good debt when the returns from the investment you are purchasing with the debt are higher than the debt payments. Read up on NPV (Net Present Value).
So in the case of buying a home, a debt is a good debt if the money you are saving from Renting are higher than the payments to your mortgage. |

| I think that these are terms that a lending institution uses to qualify your creditworthiness. A thousand dollars of student loan debt is most likely considered better debt than say a thousand dollar credit card debt. |

That's basically it. It's a either a recourse loan (like a student one, where a bankruptcy filing doesn't forgive it) or a secured one (car or home loan). |
